Buddha said, “Those who have failed to work toward the truth have missed the purpose of living.” This reminds me to look beyond the story of my limited, personal truth about situations and people.

Whether in the workplace or in our private lives, we have to look beyond our limited understanding to see truth. For me, that means making a conscious effort to expand my awareness to encompass the whole truth. Here are several questions I use to help uncover more of the truth:

  • “What’s the history or context of the person, place, predicament or opportunity? How did this get to be what it is today?”
  • “What are the mindsets, beliefs and values of the various stakeholders involved?”
  • “What’s here that I’m not seeing?”

In all situations and relationships, search of the whole truth. It is the constructive alternative that leads to lasting solutions.
