Change is a challenging process. 1. You can’t stop it – it’s inevitable. 2. When change is afoot, the status quo is no longer relevant – it just doesn’t work. 3. New ways of thinking, feeling and behaving are required.
Here are a several tips to help you navigate and lead others through the process.
- Share specifics about where the organization is headed and why. You’ll have to reinforce this message multiple times.
- Identify what is changing, and what is not.
- Acknowledge feelings of loss, fear, uncertainty, perhaps even anger, that accompany change. Losses like relationships, power and influence, a sense of control or the comfort of known routine.
- Clarify and provide the support people needed to traverse the gap between the current state and the anticipated new state.
