Meet Them Where They Are
When leaders accept a new role, or move to a new company, they enter with the intention of having measurable impact; to deliver on the promise their unique portfolio of experiences, skills and potential holds.
As a coach, I’m often in the position of encouraging them to take the long view:
- First, get a clear sense of the organization – its people, culture and appetite for change.
- Then, use their learnings to set strategic, stretch goals to move the organization in the desired direction.
- Make sure the implementation plan acknowledges reality and takes into account environmental forces that facilitate and hinder change.
As you enter a new a position, meet the people and the culture where they are. You’ll be better positioned to lead change.
