Without guilt, shame, pride, or resentment, David acknowledged his privilege. He said, “Being white, male, straight and fully abled, is like I have the winning lottery ticket. No matter what I do, I get receive unearned benefits from those parts of my identity. What do I do with that? How do I extend privilege to others? “
He went on to say, “As I witnessed all that happened last year – COVID, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, the economic insecurity of many – I witnessed it from my place of safety and security. I feel heartbroken about the inequities and difficult conditions others experience. I want to take action. But what can I do?” After a few minutes, he concluded, “I need to be in conversation with others to figure that out.”
If like David you want to be of service, connect with a colleague, or start a group in your workplace, and figure out what action you can take to be part of the solution to the ills and challenges you see.
