We’re conditioned to believe that if we’re not actively engaged in doing something, we’re not using our time wisely. But being in constant motion doesn’t equal being productive. Sometimes taking time to stop and think is more valuable than pushing yourself to exhaustion.

One of the great secrets of successful business people is their commitment to stepping away from the daily hustle and bustle. For a day or so, they retreat and relax, spending time being and thinking. This is a wonderful way to summon creativity and generate solutions.

If you don’t have the luxury of taking an extended break, try stepping away from a project you’re struggling with to take a walk, or savor a cup of tea or coffee. If you’re nearing the end of your day, take comfort in walking away from a complex issue to get a good night’s sleep. You’ll be surprised how things that didn’t occur to you the day before magically find their way to you after a break from struggle and exhaustion.
