Here are a few ideas for boosting workplace morale. Each is deceptively simple, but very effective:

  • For one-on-one conversations, or group meetings, turn off your cell phone. Put it away. Respond to messages and texts later.
  • When someone enters your workspace, turn and face her. Give the quality of eye contact that conveys listening and respect.
  • Give the people around you your undivided attention. Listen to understand their whole message. Tune in to with the intention of getting a deeper sense of the person…their thoughts and feelings.
  • Put your focus on learning about others. Get curious about what their workplace experience is like, what excites them, what concerns them, what their goals are. Stop talking to others. Instead, adopt the practice of talking with them about themselves.

Your interest, a sign of caring, will have a positive effect on morale and engagement.
