Celebrating the holidays at work is becoming increasingly complex. Here are a few simple seasonal suggestions that may help you demonstrate respect for different cultures, avoid the appearance of favoritism and keep gift-giving appropriate for the relationship.

Give cards that say “Happy Holidays” or “Happy New Year!” minus the obvious Christmas imagery. Those who celebrate Christmas aren’t likely to balk at a Happy Holiday card. But those who don’t celebrate Christmas may feel marginalized by the assumption that they should go along with your Christmas tradition.

Give gifts the entire department can share in, rather than singling-out specific individuals. A tub of popcorn, a basket of sweets, nuts or fruit will eliminate gift-giving guess work, be easier on your wallet and save time. Of course, if you must single someone out, consider giving the gift in private so others don’t feel left out.
