Sometimes opportunities that we weren’t expecting come our way – something that seems like such an unlikely fit, it wasn’t even on our radar.  It may even be something we think we didn’t even want. Your first instinct may be to say thanks, but no thanks.

But, before you do, hear the person out.  Allow them to explain why you’re under consideration.  Talk to them about why they think this is a good fit for you.  Sometimes, other people see qualities in you that you don’t see in yourself.  They may recognize skills and potential that you weren’t aware you had.

Then, give yourself some time to really think it through.  What could you learn if you take this on? What new people might you get to work with?  How might your network and sphere of influence expand?  What new, personally beneficial expertise might you build?  Taking advantage of unexpected opportunities can be an important way to grow.
