According to a recent Harvard Business Review article, it’s better to find your passion outside of work rather than make your work your passion.  The article’s contributors say that this modern phenomenon of pursuing passion at work is unique to the US. Working more has become an American status symbol, while people in other countries seek and find greater fulfillment outside of work.

The danger in making your job your passion is that few jobs allow employees to focus on their interests.  Plus, if you rely on work to fulfill you, problems that arise can impact your overall happiness.

Finding something outside of work allows you to switch off and get the needed respite to regain your energy for the next day.  Detaching reduces stress, and increases energy and creativity, which has been shown to boosts engagement and retention.
