While conflict is inevitable and can be seen as the healthy manifestation of competition, how we engage during conflict is key.  A little self-awareness can go a long way to help us steer away from behavior that serves no one.  Here are a few well-worn ruts to resist.

The “I’m right, you’re wrong” mindset.  A hint that you’re stuck in this rut is when you find yourself arguing solely to prove another wrong.

Competing to always win.  This way of operating sets up a win-lose dynamic which perpetuates conflict because losers usually find ways to get even.

Remember, if you’re in a downward spiral of back and forth and you’re fighting to prevail, or the other person gives up and goes silent, you’re not on the road to a lasting resolution.

As leaders, shift away from win-at-all-cost.  Instead, inspire teamwork, collaboration and partnership which are the foundation of working together for the good of the enterprise.
