When managers hoard talent, they may think they’re protecting their turf. But according to Gallup, they’re actually driving the best people away.  When great employees realize they won’t be given opportunities to move up, they’ll look for work outside the company.

Gallup recommends these approaches to those responsible for managing human capital.

  • Realize you may already have your game changer.  Rather than looking outside for someone to shake things up – which can be costly — look within for someone who, in a new role or with a new boss, can do the job.
  • Boost internal recruiting.  Make internal job boards as attractive and accessible as external search sites. Actively recruit by “selling” open positions to current employees.
  •  Proactively move stars to new roles.  Have conversations with your MVPs so you can craft job descriptions and opportunites around their career objectives.
