Today’s leaders need a keen understanding of the people who report to them, and the unique obstacles they must overcome to be successful.

Marion Anderson once said, “Leadership should be born out of the understanding of the needs of those who would be affected by it.” Her message provides clear encouragement to seek to understand what the people you’re leading need to be successful, from their perspective.

So, as you and your team march towards your common goal, consider that each person’s path to that goal may be slight different, and require building strength in a particular area. Responding to their needs will likely mean looking beyond existing tools and approaches.

Perhaps one person needs confidence boosting, while another could benefit from lessons on effective communication or organization. Once you know their challenges, look for creative ways to lessen their impact.
