Instantly Summon Your Personal Power

Researchers at Northwestern University hypothesize that highly generative adults — those who are committed to their own growth and that of future generations — tell stories of redemption about their lives.  Redemption stories are the form used in fairy tales and enthralling literature.

Generally, while moving through life merrily, the heroine or hero encounters unexpected hardships and misfortunes.  She overcomes them through development of values and a belief system that lead to wisdom and right action.  This experience empowers her to save herself, gain liberation and transform her life.

The study, which was recently published in the journal, “Psychological Science,” suggests those who see their lives as a story of personal redemption are more engaged with the world around them, and enjoy good mental health.

What is your redemption story?  To develop your personal narrative, or upgrade it, review the pivot points in your life – those powerful experiences that shaped your beliefs and now inform your decisions and actions.  Mine them for wisdom.  Carry forward the lessons that inspire heroism and resilience.

If you want to be more positive, resilient, generative, able to rise above the obstacles and challenges inherent in life, identify with your redemption story.  It may allow you to connect more deeply with your personal spirit of purpose.  Your sense of mission and purpose help you reframe hardships into lessons that serve, and transform trials into strength and wisdom.  Stories that affirm your ability to surmount difficulties fuel optimism, stimulate constructive contributions to family, work and community, and foster hope and a belief that perseverance and purpose are key to creation of a better life for self and others.
